Working my way through the patterns on my to-do list... Safire (originally created last year) is now available on Ravelry (and below)! As with the others, this is a free pattern so I did not use a tech editor. Though I checked, double-checked, and triple-checked, there may still be errors in the pattern, so please do not hesitate to contact me if you encounter any.

Hi, Hilary--I'm knitting up Safire, and I'm eager to wear it. Possibly I'm a dunce, but I can't get the increases to add up. For size Small, I count (60 cast on sts)+(24 times 8 increases for the raglan shaping)+(18 times 2 increases for the neckline shaping)=288 sts... but the pattern says I should have only 252 sts. Please HELP!
Fantastic pattern, thanks for sharing!
@margaretpollock: I was having the same issue, and I believe it is a typo. It looks like those totals are for just the raglan increases, and do not include the front increases.
On the next page, adding the total body sts with the sts for the arm, you get the correct amount. (172 + 58 + 58 = 288)
@margaretpollock -- I have a memory of responding to your comment last month, but now I can find no record of it! I apologize for not getting back to you. The 252 stitch count on that page is the number of sts you should have after the raglan shaping is complete -- because for size S you don't start the neckline shaping until after the raglan shaping is done, there are no neckline stitches to add. The wording makes it confusing...I should have said "Total sts after raglan shaping is complete (including sts increased on fronts for sizes L-4XL only). The stitch count is correct on the next page.
@Kyrga -- Thank you for your response! And I'm sorry you had an issue with this, too! I'll be sure to change the wording the next time I update the pattern.
@Hilary: Actually, I may have been mistaken in my previous comment! I am pretty terrible at following instructions >.<
Sweater turned out fabulous in the end though! Thanks again for the pattern =)
@Anonymous -- So glad you were happy with how it turned out! :)
Im knitting the M size. When i get to the first.decrease and do type 2 i somehow get stitch marker between two purls instead of knit. Then as i continue on instead.of stitch marker at two knits i get 2 purls. I cant figure.out what i did wrong. My stitches add up before ribbing n decreases add up. Pls help
@Kara Keung Hmm, that's weird! If you do decrease type 2, it will be "work to 4 sts before marker, ssk, p1, k1, sm, k1, p1, k2tog" -- so if you do that as written, you'll have a marker between two knits. If you have a marker between two purls, it sounds like you're just not doing the row as written. Or are you talking about the marker being between two purls on the row directly following the first decrease? That makes sense...if it's between two knits on the RS, it will be between two purls on the WS. As for the second set of decreases around the *next* stitch marker, it is correct that the marker will be between two purls. If you look at the Decrease Row instructions, for size M, you will do dec type 2 (st marker between 2 knits) for the first marker, then decrease type 1 (st marker between 2 purls) for the second marker. I hope that helps!
Hi Hilary, I'm going to make Safire in medium for my daughter-in-law and for some reason I can't get thru the beginning of the raglan increases. Maybe I'm getting too old for knitting! Am I correct to repeat the last two rows 24 times and then continue the front increases on every RS side for 19 times more. I hope I'm reading it right but not feeling very secure about it. I tried to leave a comment (question) yesterday, but since I don't see it I'm assuming I did something wrong. Thanks for your help - I'd really love to complete this project and it's my first 'top down' which is probably part of the problem.
Yes -- do the raglan inc row, then purl 1 row, then rep those 2 rows 24 times. Then after that last purl row, do the front inc row, then rep the front inc row on every RS row 19 more times.
Hilary, thank you so very much.
Hi Hilary,
I hope you had a very happy Thanksgiving. I'm sorry to bother you again but my numbers just don't add up. After the first raglan inc row I have the correct 84 sts. But if I increase 8 sts every RS for 24 rows that comes to the 276 sts noted. Do you THEN increase 19 RS rows only for the front increases (2 increases per RS row)? Thanks very much.
Because you don't start the front increases until after the raglan shaping is complete, the 276 sts is correct. Patt says "Total sts after raglan shaping is complete (including sts increased on fronts *of which you have none yet*): 276."
Hilary, I am stuck again. I've even taken this apart and done it again. I'm decreasing the ribbing using type 2 and then type 1 and they are not ending up symmetrical which I assume they should. Type 2now has two stitches on each side of the marker (at row 3) and type 1 has k,p,k,p,marker, p,k,p,k. I'm about ready to tear my hair out. Thanks.
Honestly, it doesn't really matter so much -- just decrease in a way that looks good to you that is in keeping with the ribbing. I'm sorry -- it's been so long since I knit this that I can't remember many of the specifics. If you're following the pattern exactly, then it may be that it doesn't end up perfectly symmetrical.
P.S. If you have any additional questions, please shoot me an email using the email address at the end of the pattern. It's much easier for me to respond that way. Thank you!
