Ok, y'all. I'm a little disappointed by the low level of geekiness going on here! Mirabor? Captain Picard's fake daughter in that tear-jerking episode where he gets zapped by some alien probe and lives an entire lifetime in 30 minutes, complete with wife, kids, and grandkids, missing the Enterprise at first but then coming to the realization that he can't imagine his life without a family and this lovely community he's become a part of, just as he finds out it's all in his mind*?? No one else has Season 5 on DVD and always starts with that episode, even knowing it will end in a puddle of sobs? (Insert mock surprise here.) Sorry, that was a little obscure. But some of you did pick up on the Latin root of Mirabor, which makes me very proud. The verb miror (wonder/marvel/be amazed/etc.) and its adjective spin-offs such as mirabilis (marvelous/amazing) relate to the Fairy Tale colorway in that fairy tales are full of magic/amazement/marvel. Ok, really I just wanted to name a sweater after a Star Trek character.
And Karina got it! At almost the last minute, she posted her guess, which mentions both Latin and Star Trek. (Karina, I'll send you a Ravelry message to figure out how to get you the pattern.)
In other news, I am very, very excited to tell you that there will be a brand new Yarniad pattern (and interview - eek!) coming out in Julie Turjoman's new book, Brave New Knits, which will be released at the end of this month. More about that later (in which I will use the word "squeeeee!!!" several times), but for now you can see a little tiny sneak preview of my design on her blog, here.

*I am not kidding you, I just started tearing up as I wrote that.

Thanks for the contest, Hilary. I'm way surprised I got the answer right. I'll be looking forward to the new pattern and book.
Ok, the Star Trek thing... yeah, that episode always gets to me too.
Love the story about mirabor. And congrats to Karina.
I kept reading "Latino Star Trek" and I got all excited that there was going to be another series. Sigh.
Great interview, and the sneak peek is intriguing! I'm becoming more and more excited about the release of this book. :)
Oh my gosh, I was thinking about that episode just last night. Reading your blog yesterday must have triggered my unconscious mind. Too bad I couldn't figure it out consciously! :) GREAT episode and yes, I cry too.
Caroline
uh oh. My geeky husband might divorce me for not knowing! We have the VHS collection in the basement. - - and what a great interview! Can't wait to see what that new pattern is.....
What an honor for you as an up and coming designer - a book spotlight - nice work!
OMG, I wish I had read this before! I love that episode!!! That and Darmok. Must go watch it now. :)
LOL- we just ordered Star Trek: TNG: Season 1 from Netflix... got a ways, but soon enough I should know exactly what you are talking about!
(oh and of course I already have the pattern...)
Oh my gosh I love that episode! How did I not remember her name? You want geekiness? I used to listen to the musical suite from that show all the time (because The Best of Star Trek cd was, in fact, my first cd ever).
Congrats on the new pattern!
I actually have to avoid that episode because it makes me so sad! As soon as I read your post I thought of Picard playing the flute at the end of the episode - such bittersweet aloneness.
Love your blog, by the way!
Alison
I am so excited about the book! I have it pre-ordered and I am anxiously waiting for it. Congrats on such a great spotlight on you and your designs!
I've never heard such an expression in English, but in French, we'd say that we will go to bed less stupid tonight!!!
That WAS obscure - LOL I'm a huge fan of Star Trek.... but only the original show. Must be my age :)
SOOOOOO exciting to see you featured in a knitting book!!! That's very cool. And from the sneak peek it looks like you picked a luscious yarn for that design.
Total squeee! You're an awesome designer. And I love the impulse to give knits lovely, meaningful names. Fantabulous :)
That's so exciting!!! I can't wait to see your new pattern, I'm sure it'll be awesome. I'm going to check out that sneak peak....
OMG DUDE!!!
That is so cool about the book!!! Wow!!!
Clearly I have not been keeping up in blog-land, otherwise I would have offered my congratulations much earlier.
SQUEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
