I present to you the product of my second collaboration with Tess' Designer Yarns, Carrie's Ties: fun accessories to add a little menswear-inspired flair to your outfit!
During a viewing of the second Sex and the City movie, the daughter of Tess' shop owner (and shop namesake) spotted Carrie wearing a knitted tie during the anniversary scene with Big. I was immediately called in for some design consultation. What resulted was a super easy Garter Stitch tie, knit flat with bulky yarn and large-ish needles (super fast, too!), and a slightly more involved Stockinette version, knit in the round on smaller needles (I loved the look of Carrie's outfit in promotional images like this one). I think a necktie like this can be a fun addition to a going-out outfit, a work outfit, you name it! Plus, it's a great way to use up those spare half-skeins of yarn you have around.
Carrie's Ties - $3.00 on Ravelry (no account required)
The Garter Stitch version is knit from the tip of the thin end of the tie to the tip of the wider end. It's all Garter Stitch, with easy increases and decreases to shape it.
Sizes: one; 32.5” long, 2.5” wide at thickest, 1.75” at thinnest
Yarn Requirements: Tess’ Designer Yarns Cultivated Silk and Wool, red (50% Silk, 50% Wool, 200 yards per 100g skein): 50 yards Or Tess’ Designer Yarns Microfiber Ribbon, black (100% Nylon, 333 yards per 150g skein): 95 yards held double
Needles: US 10 (6.0mm) needles (circular, straight, or dpns)
Gauge: 18 stitches x 22 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch
The Stockinette Stitch version is knit in the round (slipped stitches on either side allow it to lay flat) from the tip of the wider end to the tip of the thin end. It takes a little while longer to make, but you get to practice some fun techniques and the end result is quite pretty. This version comes in two different sizes.
Sizes: S (L) = 39 (44.5)” long, 3 (4)” wide at thickest, 1.25 (1.25)” at thinnest
Yarn Requirements: Tess’ Designer Yarns Microfiber Ribbon (100% Nylon, 333 yards per 150g skein): 120 (160) yards of Steel Grey (Black)
Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) circular needle, at least 24” long (you will be knitting in the round using the Magic Loop technique)
Gauge: 28 stitches x 32 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch
The pattern can also be found on the Tess' Yarns website -- stay tuned for Carrie's Tie kits! And if you happen to be traveling to Stitches Midwest this weekend, Tess herself will be there with lots of lovely yarn and patterns and the sample ties, too!

Very cute, Hilary! What a great little accessory - and not your run of the mill project, either!
Oh oh oh oh!!! So stylish and looks fantastic all the ways you've shown it! Love to see you working with Tess' Designer Yarns :) Plus, I think that if knit longer and made with stripes or a pattern in a very fine yarn it would be a great "guy" gift too....
Lovely!
Oh my! I really love the stockinette version! It really looks classic! I wonder if my boyfriend would wear a knitted tie...oo the possibilities!
